On the 13th, Greenpeace Brasil launched a public notice for the granting of master’s scholarships and support for field work for graduate students, with projects in the areas of Botany and Zoology linked to Graduate Programs of Public Education Institutions and Research based in Brazil, within the Amazon Biome. Interested researchers have until March 13 to register.

The program entitled “Tatiana de Carvalho” for Research and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Amazon will select proposals for the development of research related to the identification and description of Amazonian biodiversity, particularly in areas under pressure from deforestation, fires and roads. “We are losing more and more forests without even knowing everything that is there. In addition to zeroing deforestation, it is necessary to prioritize scientific research aiming at the knowledge of Amazonian biodiversity. The initiative aims to support and disseminate scientific research focused on the knowledge of Amazon biodiversity and the discoveries of new species”, says Cristiane Mazzetti, of the Amazon campaign of Greenpeace.

The launch of this announcement takes place at a very important moment: 2020 is a decisive year for the climate emergency and the loss of biodiversity. In the midst of this crisis, Greenpeace considers it essential to strengthen the protection of biodiversity and guarantee efforts to achieve zero deforestation, as it is with the forest standing that we can mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure the habitat of species.

Studies show that the disappearance of global biodiversity has been occurring a thousand times faster than if it happened naturally, and among the causes is the destruction of the species’ habitat. Therefore, thinking about the valorization of scientific works and the importance of the forest, the organization started this work focused on biodiversity. In addition to the announcement, Greenpeace Brasil also has a website that gathers the newly documented species, exposing the risks that threaten their natural habitat.

The program has two sources of inspiration: the work of hundreds of researchers, technicians, bushmen, and others who give their heart and soul to the work of revealing the biodiversity contained in forests and also environmental activist Tatiana de Carvalho, an activist at Greenpeace Brasil who dedicated his life to the conservation of the Amazon.

“Supporting researchers in the identification and description of species at this time of crisis in science, climate and biodiversity, is also contributing to the conservation of this biome and ensuring environmental services such as the regional and global climate balance. Only research carried out at the Goeldi Museum , in Pará, they identified 606 new species in the last twenty years (2000-2019), if there were more incentives, imagine how many other species would already be known, however science has also been weakened by the government, “adds Cristiane.
