The best and the worst of the Colombian Amazon
The “Amazonas 2030” project, which evaluates the public and private management of the Colombian Amazon region, has information that allows us to recognize the best and worst of the Amazon in that country. Governance, security, justice and access to information are in terrible shape. The environmental issue is in a somewhat better situation, although it still leaves something to be desired.
Access to information does not exist, the situation of indigenous peoples is poor, economy, education, health, all this needs to improve. In a study published by the project, the environmental situation had one of the best qualifications due to the existence of large extensions of forest in the country.
Despite this, the Amazon is unknown to almost seven out of ten Colombians (equivalent to 67%), even though it occupies almost half (42%) of the national territory. Although many Colombians have never stepped into the woods, they believe it must be preserved.
On the other hand, although they are aware of the importance of their conservation, people are pessimistic: they believe that the forest situation will be very critical in ten years. Another relevant fact reported by the project is that three out of ten Colombians (34%) consider the Amazon to be a world heritage, not just their own country.
